AI Without Internet: Using AI Fully Offline on Windows and Mac

How to work with AI without internet — fully offline, on your own computer. What you need, which models fit, and what you gain in privacy.

The usual chatbots live in the cloud: no internet, no answer. But an AI can also work fully offline, right on your computer. That's handy on the road, on a plane, and anywhere the network is unreliable — and it also happens to be the highest level of privacy. Here's how it works.

How AI works without internet

The secret is in where the model lives. A cloud chat sends every request to someone else's server. A local model, instead, downloads once and then runs on your own hardware — all the computation happens in your computer's RAM. No internet required for that.

That's exactly how Doka is built: after installation, the model downloads once, and everything after that happens offline.

You'll only need internet in two cases: downloading the model itself on first launch, and if you ask the agent to look something up online. Everything else — conversation, working with files — works with no connection.

What this gets you

  • Privacy. No request, file, or document goes to someone else's server.
  • Works everywhere. On a plane, out of town, on bad connections — doesn't matter.
  • No subscription, no limits. A local model doesn't count tokens.

For sensitive data — contracts, internal spreadsheets, personal information — offline mode is a fundamentally different level of trust than a cloud chat.

How to run an offline AI

  1. Download Doka and install it (Windows or Mac).
  2. On first launch, it picks and downloads a model that matches your available memory on its own — more on this step.
  3. From there you can turn off the internet and work — the model is already on your computer.

The bottom line

AI without internet is just a local model on your computer. Download it once, then work offline, even on a plane, with nothing going to someone else's servers. Doka is free, and the model installs automatically.
